What Is an ATS Resume Checker?

An ATS resume checker opens your resume file the way applicant tracking software does: it pulls the text out, then reports what got lost or scrambled on the way. A useful one shows you that extracted text, scores the document, and tells you which finding is costing you the most points. Three things get checked:

  • Formatting and parsing: whether the text can be pulled out of the file at all, whether your sections arrive in the order you wrote them, and what columns, tables, text boxes, unembedded fonts and contact details left in the page header do to that.
  • Keywords and evidence: whether the sections an employer expects are present, and whether your bullets carry dates, numbers and the terms the role actually uses rather than a list of duties.
  • Writing quality and consistency: how readable the text is, and whether dates, titles and formatting agree with each other from one line to the next.

What 44,255 checks on this tool found

5.8%
of PDF resumes came through the layout check with nothing flagged
32.7%
used a table for layout — the most common critical finding
63.4%
listed a skill they never used anywhere else on the page

Those numbers come from every resume run through this checker between November 2025 and September 2026; the full breakdown, including the twelve layout findings and where resumes lose the most points, is in the ATS resume statistics report. A score is only half the job: what to put on a resume and which skills to list decide what the parser finds in the first place, and our Resume Worded review explains why a content score and a file-level check answer different questions.

What Is a Good ATS Score? What 44,255 Resumes Say

A good ATS score on this checker is 85 or above: that is an A, and only 6.1% of the 44,255 resumes we have scored reached it. The average is 61.5, a low C. The distribution is not a curve with most people in the middle; it is bottom-heavy. 20.4% of resumes score a B (70–84), 34.7% a C (55–69), 25.7% a D (40–54) and 13.1% an F. Read those bands as a description of the file, not of you: a D almost always means the layout is losing data in extraction, a C means the file reads but a section is coming through badly or the bullets carry no numbers, and a B means the document is clean and the remaining points are about keyword evidence. Aim to clear the file side completely first. After that, 85 is the number that says the content checks are largely clean too.

What an ATS Resume Scanner Sees That Your Screen Does Not

File analysis showing text that extracts as unreadable characters because of broken glyph mapping

The File That Extracts as Nonsense

Some PDFs that come out of design tools look immaculate and copy out as symbols. The letter shapes are drawn correctly, but the font never records which shape stands for which character, so anything that pulls text from the file gets junk. Select a paragraph, paste it into a plain text box, and you will see it. Most people never think to try. We run the extraction for you and put the result on the screen.

The Phone Number Nobody Receives

In Word and in PDF the page header is a separate layer from the body of the document. Put your name, email and number up there and most parsers walk straight past them. Your application lands with nothing to call you on, and nobody on the other side has any reason to suspect something went missing. On your screen it all still sits exactly where you left it.

The Words You Did Not Put There

Some resumes carry text no human eye can find: keywords set in white on white, or shrunk under four points. It usually arrives inside a template somebody downloaded, or it is left over from an edit two versions ago. Scrolling will not turn it up. The parser reads every word of it, and from the recruiter's side it reads as an attempt to game the filter. If your file has any, we show you the exact words.

What We Check: 34 Checks, Named

Seventeen run on the file you upload and seventeen run on what it says. The file side is free in full, whether or not you ever make an account.

  • File, 17 checks: scanned pages with no text layer, multi-column and sidebar layouts, tables, text boxes, contact details in the header or footer, non-standard section headings, data trapped in charts, fonts that are not embedded, type under 9pt, ligature and private-use glyphs, decorative bullets and icons, invisible links, unsafe formats such as RTF and DOC, password protection, form fields, hidden white-on-white text, and broken character mapping. If the layout is what is costing you, our ATS-friendly resume templates start from a structure that already passes these.
  • Content, 17 checks: contact block, work experience structure, work experience content, education, skills, summary, section titles, location format, projects, certificates, languages, awards, custom sections, empty supplementary sections, readability, keyword density and date consistency.

How to Check Your Resume's ATS Score in Three Steps

UPLOAD
01

Upload the File Itself

PDF or Word (.docx), up to 2 MB. No card, no account. Upload the file rather than pasting the text, because the layout, font and header checks only have something to work with when the actual document is in our hands.

Upload screen accepting PDF and Word resume files up to 2 MB
READ
02

Read the Raw Text

The text pulled out of your file appears with line numbers, open from the start. Did your sections keep their order. Is your phone number in there at all. Did the letters survive. You do not need to know anything about parsers to answer that; you only need to read it.

REVIEW
03

Take the Heaviest Findings First

Each finding names the section it came from and the points it is costing, and the list opens with the expensive ones. Start at the top and your first half hour buys you the most. Click a finding and it takes you to that line in your resume.

FIX
04

Fix It and Let It Rescore

Edit in the resume builder. Roughly half a minute after you stop typing, the content score works itself out again. The layout and font findings belong to the file you uploaded, and there is no file in the builder, so those do not recalculate here. To confirm you have cleared them, download the new version and upload it again.

Check If Your Resume Is ATS-Friendly in Two Minutes, Without Any Tool

You do not need us for a first answer. Three things you can do right now with the file already open on your screen:

  1. Select all the text in your PDF and copy it. If nothing highlights, the page is an image and no parser can read a word of it.
  2. Paste what you copied into a plain text editor. Read the order it arrives in. Two columns that interleave line by line, a job title that lands three paragraphs from its dates, or letters that come out as boxes and symbols are all problems a recruiter never sees and never tells you about.
  3. Look for your phone number and email in what you pasted. If they are missing, they are sitting in the page header, which most parsers skip.
  4. Then mind the gap. That test catches the crude failures. It will not show you type under 9pt, a font that is not embedded, form fields, or keywords hidden in white on white, which is where the remaining checks come in.

Match Your Resume to the Job Description

Whether the file reads is one question. Whether it answers the specific advert in front of you is a different one, and no amount of formatting work settles it.

Paste the job description in and you get a match score for that advert on its own, kept separate from your resume score, plus the terms the posting asks for that your skills, titles and certificates never mention. You decide which of them to add, so nothing lands on the page you could not defend in an interview. This part is on the paid plan, and it has its own page if you want the detail: resume and job description match score.

What we will not tell you to do is pad the file with keywords. Hidden text is one of the things the free file check reports as a problem, not a tactic. When a recruiter finds white-on-white terms in a document, the document is what gets thrown out.

How Your ATS Score Is Calculated

The score runs from 0 to 100 across five weighted categories. Whether the file reads at all is the heaviest at 30 points, because nothing else matters if the text never comes out. Evidence in your bullets carries 26, completeness 16, clarity 14 and consistency 14.

A category that does not apply to your resume is dropped from the total rather than scored zero, so a first-year graduate with no certificates section is not punished for a section they were never going to have. The remaining weights are rebalanced to 100 instead.

It is a fixed rule set, not a model's opinion. The same file scores the same every time, and every finding tells you which category it came from and how many points it took. Grades sit at 92 and up for A+, 85 for A, 70 for B, 55 for C, 40 for D.

One thing the number is not: a verdict from an employer's software. It is our rubric applied to your document. What it tells you reliably is which problem is costing you the most, and in what order to spend your evening.

ATS score broken down by category, with each finding showing the points it cost

Your Resume Is Deleted After 24 Hours

You do not open an account to run the check, and you do not type in a card. The file you upload and the result it produced are both deleted 24 hours later, along with everything extracted from them.

  • No account and no card to see your score, the extracted text and the findings.
  • Deleted after 24 hours: your file and its results are removed automatically, whether you come back or not.
  • An account is optional and only comes into it if you want to keep the result, edit the resume here, or come back to it later.

ATS Resume Checker FAQ

What is free and what needs a paid plan?
Free, with no account and no card: your score and the points lost in each of the five categories, the raw text extracted from your file, all seventeen file-side findings in full with their fixes, every critical content finding in full, and three content fixes written out. The paid plan adds the written fix text for the remaining content findings, the job description match score with its missing terms, and AI rewriting that returns three versions of a bullet for you to choose from. Findings that need a plan still show you their section, their severity and the points they cost, so you can see what you would be paying for before you decide.
How do I check if my resume is ATS friendly?
Upload the file itself rather than pasting the text, then read the extracted text at the top of the result. Three questions answer it: did your sections come out in the order you wrote them, is your phone number in there at all, and are the letters still letters rather than symbols. If all three hold, the document reads. The score then tells you where the remaining points went. You can do a rough version of this by hand. Select everything in the PDF, paste it into a plain text box and look at what arrives. That only catches the crudest problems though. It will not show you a font sitting under 9pt, contact details stranded in the page header, or words hidden in white on white.
Is 70 a good ATS score?
It is a B. The grades run A+ from 92, A from 85, B from 70, C from 55, D from 40, and F below that. A 70 usually means the file itself reads cleanly and the points are coming off the content side instead: thin bullets, a section missing, dates that do not agree with each other. It is worth being clear about what the number is not. It is our rubric, a fixed rule set applied to your document, not a verdict from any employer's software. No checker can tell you whether a particular company's system will pass you, and anyone promising a guaranteed pass is selling you something. Read it as a list of things to fix in order of what they cost you.
What is a good ATS score to aim for?
Clear the file side first, then push the content. If file readability is costing you nothing out of its 30 points, your document reads, and that is the part an employer's software actually reacts to. After that, 85 and up means the content checks are largely clean too. Below 55 there is usually one structural problem doing most of the damage, and the list is ordered so you meet it first. Chasing a perfect score is not worth an evening; clearing the critical findings is.
Will my resume pass an ATS?
Nobody can promise you that, us included, and you should be wary of any tool that does. What we can tell you is whether the document can be read without effort, which is the part that gets decided before a human is involved. Whether you then match the role is a separate question that depends on the posting, the shortlist and the person reading. The two things worth acting on are the same either way: make the file readable, and make the content answer the advert.
There are already free checkers that do this. What is different?
Most of them read text you paste in. We open your file. A two-column layout, a number left in the header, a font with broken character mapping, words hidden in white on white: none of that lives in the text, it lives in the structure of the document, so a pasted copy cannot show it. Extraction runs through an open-source engine widely used in resume parsing. The score behind it is a fixed rule set, not a model's opinion, so the same file scores the same every time. Five weighted categories: whether the file reads at all is the heaviest at 30 points, then evidence in your bullets at 26, completeness at 16, clarity and consistency at 14 each. A category that does not apply to your resume is dropped from the total rather than scored zero.
Resume checker, resume scanner, resume score, resume review, CV checker, ATS test: are these different things?
Mostly they are the same job under different names, and which one you type depends on where you learned the phrase. A resume scanner or an ATS test usually points at the file side: can the document be read. A resume grader, a resume score or an ATS score points at the number you get at the end. A resume review usually means a human reads the content; the closest thing here is the content side of the report, which names the section, the finding and the fix for each of the seventeen content checks. CV checker is the same tool with the word most of the world outside the US uses for the document. This page does both halves, so whichever term brought you here, you upload one file and get the extracted text, the score and the findings from it.
Why not just ask a chat assistant?
Ask it. For wording it is genuinely useful. But what you paste into a chat window is text, not the file you are about to send, and it has no way of telling you what a parser gets out of that file. That is the first thing on our screen. There is a rewriting tool in here too, on the paid side. Order matters though: sort out whether the document reads before you spend an evening on adjectives.
What are the most common ATS resume mistakes?
In the files we open, the same handful keeps coming back. Contact details typed into the page header, where most parsers never look. Two-column and sidebar layouts, which interleave line by line once the text is pulled out. Tables and text boxes holding job titles or dates. A PDF exported as an image, with no text layer at all. Fonts that are not embedded, or set small enough that extraction turns unreliable. And hidden keywords left behind by a downloaded template. None of these are visible on your screen, which is why they survive so many rounds of proofreading. Starting from an ATS-friendly template avoids most of them, and our resume examples show what the content side looks like when it scores well.
How hard is it to cancel?
Not hard. There is a cancel button on the subscription screen in your account, so no email to write and nobody to get hold of. The date of your next payment is on the same screen, and cancelling leaves your access running until the end of the period you paid for. There is no annual plan and no free trial.
Does it work on a resume that is not in English?
On the file side, completely. Layout, tables, fonts, headers and character mapping have nothing to do with language, and a Spanish or Japanese document is checked the same way. On the content side, part of it runs: section structure, missing sections, contact details, bullet length and whether you use numbers. These stay off on purpose: verb variety, the readability formula, date-format checking, cliche detection, the keyword-density band and the list of standard section titles. All six were tuned on English, and running them on another language would take points off you for no good reason.
Is my application even going through an ATS?
Depends where you are applying. Large employers in the US and the UK almost always route applications through one, and so does anything you submit through a company careers page rather than by email. At a twenty-person firm a human usually opens the file directly. Either way the same two things decide what happens next: whether the document can be read without effort, and whether the content lines up with the ad. The fixes serve both readers.
Photos, date formats, one page: are those rules real?
Mostly not, and we deliberately do not score them. A photo does not make your file unreadable, though it is worth knowing that US employers tend not to expect one while plenty of European ones do. There is no single correct date format. One page is a preference, not a rule, and squeezing two pages into one usually wrecks the spacing and costs you readability. We do not suggest stuffing keywords either. When we find hidden ones we report them as a problem. Two questions are being asked here: does the document read cleanly, and does what it says match the job.
Can I fix the problems here?
Yes. Every finding jumps you to the exact place in the builder and you edit it there. On a paid plan you can have a bullet rewritten and choose from three versions; none of them replaces your text on its own. Once the file reads cleanly, the OwlApply job board ranks openings against that resume, so the closest fits come up first.
How do I increase my ATS score?
Start with the findings that cost the most points, which the report already orders for you. Across 44,255 checks the three fixes that move the number furthest are the same three: take job titles and dates out of tables (32.7% of PDFs use one for layout), rename creative section headings back to Experience, Education and Skills (39.2% use a heading a parser does not recognise), and mention each skill from your Skills section somewhere in a bullet, because 63.4% of resumes list skills that never appear in the experience. Then move contact details out of the page header, embed your fonts, and give each role three to five bullets that start with a verb and end with a number. Re-upload after each round; the same file scores the same every time, so the difference you see is the fix, not noise.
Does it work for CVs from India, the UK, Europe and other countries?
Yes. The parser reads the file the same way wherever it was written, and the checks are about structure, not nationality: two pages are fine, a photo is reported as an image rather than penalised, and a Declaration or Personal Details section is read like any other. What does trip the checks are the same things everywhere: contact details in the header, a table holding your education, dates written three different ways. If you are applying through Naukri, LinkedIn, Indeed or a company career site, the file goes through a parser first in all four cases, and this is the part it sees.
