A resume summary is three lines at the top of the page that state your title and years, your two strongest results with numbers, and the skill set you bring to the role you are applying for. It replaced the objective for anyone with a year or more of experience because it answers the recruiter's real question, "what has this person done?", before they scroll. In 44,255 resumes we checked, the summary block averaged 64 out of 100 and 46.5% needed improvement: too long, no numbers, or written about wants instead of results. Below are 40 resume summary examples by role and level, the professional summary formula they all follow, and the five edits that fix a weak one in two minutes.
The professional summary formula
[Title] with [X years] in [field/industry]. [Result 1 with a number]. [Result 2 with a number]. [Skill set or specialism] for [what the target role needs]. Three lines, 40–60 words, no first person. The first three words should be your title, because that is what a recruiter skims for and what an ATS may use to classify you. Every example below uses this shape; what changes is the numbers.

Five edits that fix a weak summary in two minutes
- Put your title in the first three words. "Results-driven professional" is not a title. "Account executive" is.
- Replace the first adjective with a number. "Experienced" becomes "5 years"; "successful" becomes "118% of quota".
- Cut anything about what you want. Wants go in the cover letter; the summary is about what you have done.
- Name the tools the posting names. The summary is the highest-weight place for a keyword an ATS matches, and the reader expects to see them here.
- Stop at three lines. If the fourth line is important, it belongs in a bullet under Experience.
If you would rather generate a first draft from your experience section and edit from there, the AI resume summary generator writes one in this format from the bullets you already have.
