A one-page first resume with education and projects sections at the top and an empty experience heading crossed out
  • Section order for a resume with no work experience
  • How to write experience bullets from things that were not jobs
  • Example: student resume with no experience (internship application)
  • Example: first job resume with no experience (non-technical)
  • What makes a first resume look empty (and how to avoid it)
  • Resume with no experience: common questions
  • •What do I put on a resume if I have no work experience?
  • •How do I write a resume with no experience for a first job?
  • •Should I include an objective if I have no experience?
  • •Is volunteer work considered experience on a resume?
  • •How long should a resume with no experience be?
  • •Should I lie or exaggerate to fill the space?

A resume with no experience is written around what you have instead of a job: education, projects, coursework, part-time and volunteer work, certifications, and skills you can demonstrate. Recruiters who hire for first jobs know you have no employment history; what they screen for is whether you understand what the role involves and whether there is any evidence you can do it. This guide shows the section order for a no-experience resume, how to write experience-style bullets from things that were not jobs, two complete examples (student and career starter), and the mistakes that make a first resume look empty when it is not.

Section order for a resume with no work experience

Diagram showing projects, volunteering and part-time work replacing the experience section on a resume with no work history
The page keeps its shape; projects, societies and part-time work take the place the job history would have held.
One page. Education and projects carry the resume.
SectionWhat goes in itNotes
Contact lineName, city, phone, professional email, LinkedIn (and GitHub or portfolio if relevant)Set up the LinkedIn profile before you send the resume
Objective2 lines: degree or status, two skills you can demonstrate, the exact role, the intent to learnFormula and 60 examples in the career objective guide
EducationDegree, institution, year, GPA if strong; relevant coursework; thesis or capstone with a one-line resultMoves to the top because it is your strongest section
Projects2–3 projects: title, tools, what it did, one number (users, accuracy, marks, money raised)This is your experience section; write it like one
Experience (any)Internships, part-time jobs, volunteering, family business, campus roles, with verb + number bulletsA gym front desk with a 22% conversion rate is experience
Skills8–12 hard skills you can be questioned on, grouped; languages with levelNothing listed that does not appear in a project or bullet
Certifications and achievementsCertifications with exams; competitions; scholarships; leadership roles with scopeParticipation certificates do not count

How to write experience bullets from things that were not jobs

The bullet formula is the same as for any job: a verb, the thing you did, the number it produced. What changes is where the numbers come from. A final-year project has users, accuracy, marks or a rank. A campus event has footfall, budget and sponsorship raised. A volunteer role has hours, people helped, calls answered. A family shop has customers per day and cash handled. A part-time tutoring gig has students and their score change. If a bullet ends without a number, ask what would have been different if you had done it badly.

  • Class project: "Built a bus-occupancy predictor in Python on 18 months of ticketing data; 87% accuracy on held-out weeks; selected for the university expo (top 10 of 140)."
  • Campus role: "Raised 3 lakh rupees in sponsorship for the annual fest as sponsorship lead, 40% more than the previous year, from 11 companies."
  • Volunteering: "Answered 300+ helpline calls over 3 months and maintained the FAQ sheet used by 25 volunteers."
  • Part-time work: "Handled 60–80 enquiries a day at a gym front desk and converted 22% of trial visits to memberships (branch average 15%)."
  • Personal project: "Published an expense-tracker app on GitHub (40 stars, 3 contributors) with a README, tests and CI."
  • Tutoring: "Tutored 6 Class 10 students in mathematics for a year; average board score rose from 61 to 78."

What makes a first resume look empty (and how to avoid it)

Do this

  • Two or three projects with numbers
  • Part-time, volunteer and campus roles written as experience
  • Skills you can be questioned on, each tied to a project
  • Certifications with exams
  • One page, standard headings, PDF

Avoid this

  • An "Experience" heading with nothing under it
  • A long list of coursework with no outcomes
  • A skills wall ("MS Word, Internet, Communication, Teamwork")
  • Hobbies, references and a declaration filling the space
  • A two-page resume for a first job

If you are applying in India, the section order and six copyable samples by degree are in the resume format for freshers guide. For the two-line objective by degree and role, see the career objective examples.

Resume with no experience: common questions

Education first, then two or three projects with numbers, then any internship, part-time, volunteer or campus role written as experience, then skills and certifications. Recruiters hiring for first jobs expect projects, not jobs.

Lead with a two-line objective naming the role and two skills you can demonstrate; put education at the top; turn projects, volunteering and part-time work into verb-plus-number bullets; keep it to one page. The two examples above show the full layout.

Yes. It is the only place to say which role you want and why you are a plausible hire. Two lines: degree or status, two skills, the exact role, the intent to learn.

Yes, when it is written like a job: title, organisation, dates, and bullets with numbers. A helpline volunteer who answered 200 calls has customer-service experience.

One page. Filling a second page with hobbies, references and a declaration signals the opposite of what you intend.

No. Interviewers ask about every line, and a fabricated internship is discovered in the first two questions. A shorter, true resume with real numbers beats a padded one.
