How to write a custodian resume
Write a custodian resume summary
- Say where you clean and how much: a school, an office route, a hospital floor or a food plant, with square feet, rooms or buildings covered.
- Name your shift and how you work, such as nights alone on a set route or days on a 3-person crew, because many postings ask for both.
- List the training employers check, such as OSHA 10, bloodborne pathogens, a food handler card or HACCP, in the first lines.
- Mention reliability in a fact instead of a word: extra shifts covered, a full year without missed days or a route finished on time every night.
Write custodian experience bullets
- Show the size of your work: square feet of floor, number of restrooms, trash bins a night or rooms turned per shift.
- Add inspection and audit results, such as a passed monthly restroom audit, ATP swab results or a health inspection score.
- Name the machines you run, such as auto scrubbers, burnishers, carpet extractors or pressure washers, and the floor types you care for.
- Count small repairs and work orders you handled or reported, and any supply budget you kept, because lead and head custodian roles look for both.
Pick the skills for a custodian resume
- Attention to detail is the top skill at about 18% of postings, followed by communication at about 16%, working independently at about 15% and customer service at about 12%; back each with a bullet.
- Dependable (about 7%) and reliable (about 5%) appear here far more often than in other jobs, along with positive attitude (about 5%); show them with attendance, extra shifts or a solo route record.
- Add the hands-on skills postings name in their duties: floor care, stripping and waxing, restroom sanitation, chemical safety and minor repairs.
Do's and don'ts
Do this
- List your diploma or GED, since about 34% of employers ask for it.
- State that you can lift up to 50 lbs and work weekends or holidays when the posting asks for it.
- Write the cleaning equipment and chemicals you know by name.
- Include a driver's license or reliable transportation when the job covers several sites.
Avoid this
- Don't write "cleaned the building" without saying how big it was and what you cleaned.
- Don't leave out past cleaning work in homes, kitchens, hotels or car washes; it counts as experience.
- Don't skip safety training and certificates, even short ones like OSHA 10 or bloodborne pathogens.
- Don't pad the resume past one page with general duty lists; keep the facts a facility manager checks.
