How to write a team leader resume
Write a team leader resume summary
- Start with where you lead and how big the shift is: the type of store, restaurant or crew, and how many people you run.
- If you were promoted from crew, say how quickly; it shows you can learn quickly.
- Name the money and safety parts of the job: cash handling, opening and closing, food safety or OSHA checks.
- Mention a wide schedule if you have one; about 15% of employers require evenings, weekends and holidays.
Write team leader experience bullets
- Give crew size and volume for each shift: people led, orders or guests served, registers balanced.
- Show cash control with a number, such as drawer variances or the largest short in a year; cash handling appears in about 5% of postings.
- Report a result you moved: drive-thru time, survey scores, shrink, labor against budget or 90-day retention.
- Say how many new hires you trained and on what, since postings ask leads to train and motivate the team.
Pick the skills for a team leader resume
- Communication (about 27% of postings), customer service (about 23%) and leadership (about 14%) top the list; put each next to a bullet that proves it.
- Cash handling appears in about 5% of postings, far more than in other jobs, so use the term where it describes your shifts.
- Add the systems you run, such as the POS, labor scheduling tools, Excel or OpenTable, and certificates such as ServSafe Manager for food roles.
Do's and don'ts
Do this
- Put the number of people you lead in the summary and in your latest job.
- List your high school diploma or GED; about 25% of employers require it.
- Show at least one cash, safety or inspection result.
- List promotions inside the same company as separate lines with their own dates.
Avoid this
- Don't write "responsible for the team" without a crew size, a shift type or a result.
- Don't drop the crew jobs you held before becoming a lead; they show you know every station.
- Don't list leadership and communication as bare words; tie them to schedules, huddles and coaching.
- Don't bury food safety or OSHA certificates at the bottom of the page.
