How to write a coach resume
Write a coach resume summary
- Name the sport, the level you coach (youth, club, high school or college) and how many seasons; if you played in high school or college, say where and which position.
- Put current First Aid, CPR and AED and your coaching license or state permit in the summary, since about 25% of employers require CPR certification.
- Give one program result, such as a season record, state qualifiers, players placed in college or students passing to the next swim level.
- For swim schools and gyms, say the age range you teach and how many lessons or classes you run a week.
Write coach experience bullets
- Count athletes, teams, practices or lessons a week so the size of each job is clear.
- Show results an athletic director can check: win-loss records, titles, state qualifiers, stat changes such as errors or goals conceded, and re-enrollment rates.
- Add parent and staff work, such as progress notes to families or grade checks; about 21% of employers list communicating with athletes, parents, faculty and administration as a duty.
- For head coaches, add staff hired, budget size, money raised, players recruited to college and safety records such as pitch counts or injury numbers.
Pick the skills for a coach resume
- Communication appears in about 30% of coaching postings and interpersonal skills in about 14%; list them and prove them with a bullet about parents, athletes or staff.
- Show an energetic style, the ability to inspire others and an engaging personality through retention or re-enrollment numbers rather than adjectives.
- Add the sport-specific skills you actually use, such as practice planning, film breakdown in Hudl, spotting, stroke technique or group soccer lessons.
Do's and don'ts
Do this
- List First Aid, CPR and AED with the year it expires; about 25% of employers require it to be current.
- Give the age group and level for every coaching job, from U10 club to varsity.
- Show your own playing background in one line, with the school or club and level.
- Say you can work afternoons, evenings and weekends if the job is part time.
Avoid this
- Don't leave out volunteer, camp or youth league seasons; about 14% of employers prefer previous coaching experience, and those seasons count.
- Don't write "helped players improve" without a stat, a record or a pass rate.
- Don't list only wins; schools also check supervision, grades, conduct and athlete safety.
- Don't bury certificates in a paragraph; list NFHS, SafeSport, Red Cross or sport-body licenses by name.
