How to write a chaplain resume
Write a chaplain resume summary
- Put your degree, CPE units and any board certification or ecclesiastical endorsement in the opening lines; that is what a spiritual care manager screens for.
- Name the setting and units you serve, such as ICU, oncology, emergency, home hospice or a senior living campus.
- Say that you care for people of every faith and none, and name your own tradition only if the employer is faith-based.
- For worship roles, lead with congregation size, the instruments you lead from and the planning tools you run, such as Planning Center.
Write chaplain experience bullets
- Count your visits: patients and families per week or per shift, hospice caseload size, or students you meet each week.
- Show on-call work with numbers, such as trauma, code and death calls a month, and say who you supported there.
- Give your assessment and charting timing, such as spiritual assessments within 24 hours of referral, charted in the record the same shift.
- Add funerals, memorials, bereavement follow-up and community clergy ties with a count for each.
Pick the skills for a chaplain resume
- Communication appears in about 26% of chaplain postings and Microsoft Office in about 9%; list both, since charting and reports are part of the job.
- Add the care skills postings name: counseling (about 10%), spiritual care (about 9%), crisis intervention, spiritual assessment and grief support.
- Show emotional stability and the ability to cope with stressful situations through your trauma and death-call bullets rather than as bare words.
Do's and don'ts
Do this
- List the M.Div. with the school and year, and each CPE unit with the ACPE center that granted it.
- Write the number of CPE units you have finished and any in progress; about 30% of employers prefer at least 4.
- Give per-week or per-month numbers for visits, calls and services so a reader can see your workload.
- Mention interdisciplinary rounds or team meetings you join; about 27% of employers describe that duty.
Avoid this
- Don't write a sermon-style summary; state your training, settings and the care you give.
- Don't share patient stories with names or details that could identify anyone.
- Don't leave out congregational or parish ministry; it counts as pastoral experience, but label it clearly.
- Don't bury the driver's license line if you are applying to hospice; about 19% of employers ask for one.
