How to write a registered nurse resume
Write a registered nurse resume summary
- Open with your title, years as an RN and the unit or setting: med-surg, progressive care, long-term care, school health.
- Name your license (state or multistate compact) and BLS, plus ACLS or a specialty certification if you hold one.
- Pick two clinical strengths the job uses, such as telemetry, clinical assessment or Epic charting, instead of personality traits.
- For charge, supervisor and manager roles, give the size of what you run: beds, staff count or budget.
Write registered nurse experience bullets
- Start the latest job with your assignment: patients per shift, unit size and shift length.
- Show safety results with numbers: medication errors, chart audit pass rates, rapid-response calls, falls, pressure injuries or CAUTI rates.
- Name who you planned care with (physicians, pharmacy, therapy, case managers) and what you taught patients and families before discharge.
- In leadership roles, show staffing and outcomes: agency or overtime hours, turnover, readmissions, HCAHPS scores and survey results.
Pick the skills for a registered nurse resume
- Nursing process (8% of postings) and critical thinking (6%) are far more common in RN postings than elsewhere, so list them next to concrete clinical skills like telemetry, IV therapy and wound care, and the EHR you chart in.
- Communication (31%), interpersonal skills (13%) and organizational skills (12%) are among the most requested; back them up in your bullets rather than only listing them.
- For specialty roles add the role's own skills: case management and discharge planning, MDS 3.0 and PDPM, or health counseling and medication administration for school nursing.
Do's and don'ts
Do this
- Put your RN license, state or compact status and BLS where a recruiter sees them in the first few seconds.
- Write the unit type and patient ratio for every nursing job so the reader can judge your acuity level.
- Include pre-licensure work as a CNA, PCT or LPN if you are a newer nurse; it shows hands-on skills.
- Use the title the employer uses, such as Registered Nurse (RN) or RN Supervisor, when it matches your role.
Avoid this
- Don't fill bullets with tasks every nurse does (took vitals, charted) without a setting, volume or result.
- Don't include patient names, record numbers or any detail that could identify a patient.
- Don't leave expired certifications on the page; give current status or the renewal date.
- Don't keep a long list of clinical rotations once you have a year or more of paid RN experience.
