How to write a facilities manager resume
Write a facilities manager resume summary
- Open with your title, years and the size and type of what you run: square footage, number of sites, and whether it is office, plant, hospital or campus space.
- Give your budget and team or vendor count in the first two lines.
- Name the building systems you know best, such as HVAC, boilers, chillers, electrical and plumbing.
- List credentials that carry weight in this field, such as IFMA FMP or CFM, BOC, EPA 608 or a PE license, right after your title.
Write facilities manager experience bullets
- Count your workload: work orders a month, assets in the CMMS, buildings or square feet covered.
- Show preventive maintenance results with before and after numbers, such as PM completion raised from 70% to 96%.
- Report money: budgets managed, contract savings from rebids, utility costs cut by retrofits.
- Include response and safety results, such as service restored within 4 hours or inspection findings closed within 30 days.
Pick the skills for a facilities manager resume
- List HVAC, electrical and plumbing if you know them, and show each in a bullet.
- Add Microsoft Office, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint, plus your CMMS by name.
- Leadership and facilities management belong in the list when your bullets show a crew, a budget or a capital project.
Do's and don'ts
Do this
- State your years in facilities or building maintenance plainly.
- Show vendor and contract work with counts and dollars.
- Say that you cover nights, weekends and emergencies if you do.
- Mention a driver's license for multi-site roles.
Avoid this
- Don't write "oversaw building maintenance" without the site size, systems and results.
- Don't list trades you cannot back up; employers who ask for HVAC or electrical knowledge will ask about it in the interview.
- Don't leave out records work, such as maintenance records and inspection reports.
- Don't hide hands-on technician years if you moved into management; they count toward the experience employers ask for.
