How to write a estimator resume
Write a estimator resume summary
- Open with your trade and project types, such as tenant improvements, HVAC and plumbing, electrical or highway and water work, and the project size range.
- Name your takeoff and estimating tools in the first lines: Bluebeam, Excel and your estimating software, such as Accubid or HCSS HeavyBid.
- If you have field time as an electrician, project engineer or in the trades, say so; it tells the reader you can catch missing scope.
- For senior roles, say which stages you price, from conceptual estimates to GMP, and how many estimators you lead.
Write estimator experience bullets
- Count your bids: estimates a year, the dollar range, and your hit rate or award rate.
- Show accuracy: conceptual estimates within a set percentage of final GMP, missed items you caught, scope gaps closed before bid day.
- Show money saved or won: value engineering accepted by owners, gaps closed with trade partners, backlog added.
- For managers and chief estimators, add team size, bid volume a year and changes to bid strategy or estimating databases.
Pick the skills for a estimator resume
- Excel (about 39% of postings), Microsoft Office (about 30%), estimating software (about 16%) and Bluebeam (about 15%) are the tools employers name most; list the exact package you use.
- Communication (about 51%), organizational skills (about 29%), analytical skills (about 27%) and attention to detail (about 26%) follow; show them through scope sheets, bid leveling and proposals.
- For electrical roles, list Accubid, electrical estimating and electrical systems knowledge.
Do's and don'ts
Do this
- Give your hit rate or award rate next to your bid count.
- Name the trades and building types you price, since a drywall estimator and a heavy civil estimator are hired for different work.
- Show drawing and specification review in a bullet; about 30% of employers ask for the ability to read construction drawings and specs.
- List your driver's license if you do site visits; about 12% of employers ask for one.
Avoid this
- Don't write "prepared estimates" without the number of bids, the project sizes and how many you won.
- Don't list software without saying what you do in it, such as takeoffs in Bluebeam or bid leveling in Excel.
- Don't leave out field work as a project engineer, superintendent or tradesperson; it supports your estimating judgment.
- Don't skip subcontractor and supplier pricing; about 24% of employers name soliciting and negotiating it as a duty.
