How to write a quality inspector resume
Write a quality inspector resume summary
- Open with what you inspect and where: machined parts, castings, electronics, food, pharmaceuticals or welds, and the type of plant or site.
- Name your measuring tools and methods in the first two lines, such as calipers, micrometers, height gauges, CMM, optical comparators or penetrant testing.
- Add the standard or system you work under, such as ISO 9001, AS9100, GMP, HACCP, ISO/IEC 17025 or AWS D1.1.
- Put certifications first when the job needs them: NAS 410 Level II for NDT, AWS CWI for welding, OSHA 10 for the plant floor.
Write quality inspector experience bullets
- Count your inspections: first articles a week, parts or lots tested per shift, welds inspected, instruments calibrated.
- Give the tolerance or spec you measure to, such as 0.0005 in., so a reader sees the precision of the work.
- Show what you caught: nonconformance reports written, bad lots held from shipping, rejectable cracks flagged, deviations closed.
- Add improvement results where you took part: scrap cut, rework reduced, on-time calibration recall rate or customer rejects avoided.
Pick the skills for a quality inspector resume
- Micrometers and calipers (about 10% of postings each) and GD&T (about 6%) are the inspection skills employers name most; list the other gauges and machines you use next to them.
- Excel (about 25%), Microsoft Office (about 18%) and Word (about 15%) show up often, because inspectors log results and write reports; say what you record and for whom.
- Communication (about 34%) and attention to detail (about 30%) lead all skills; back them with nonconformance reports, shift summaries or root cause reviews.
Do's and don'ts
Do this
- Say you read blueprints and engineering drawings, and name GD&T if you use it; about 22% of employers ask for drawing reading.
- List the type of inspection you do: incoming, in-process, final, first article or audit.
- Mention shift, overtime and weekend availability if you have it; some employers require it.
- Include physical requirements you meet, such as lifting up to 50 pounds, when the posting lists them.
Avoid this
- Don't write "inspected parts" without what parts, how many and with which tools.
- Don't list a certification level you do not hold, such as Level II or CWI, while still training; write the expected date.
- Don't skip machine operator or production jobs; about 29% of postings that state experience ask for a year or less.
- Don't leave out records work; keeping inspection and test records is a core duty in about 17% of postings.
