How to write a QA engineer resume
Write a QA engineer resume summary
- Say what kind of testing you do in the first line: manual, automation, performance, hardware or SDET-style test code. A software tester and a test engineer on a circuit-board line are read very differently.
- Name the products you test and the domain, such as payments, insurance claims or avionics boards, so the reader can judge the risk you handle.
- List your main language and framework pair, such as Python with Playwright or Java with TestNG; about 29% of postings name Python and about 18% name Selenium.
- Add an ISTQB certificate if you hold one, and for lead roles the size of the team you run.
Write QA engineer experience bullets
- Count your test work: test cases run per sprint, defects filed a month, endpoints covered or tests that run on every merge.
- Show what automation saved, such as a regression cycle cut from 3 days to 1 or a suite runtime cut from 90 to 22 minutes.
- Report defects that never reached users: release-blocking bugs caught, regressions stopped by quality gates, or fewer production incidents.
- For performance and hardware test, give the load or volume: concurrent users, requests per second, units tested a month, false failure rate.
Pick the skills for a QA engineer resume
- Group tools by job: languages (Python, Java, JavaScript, SQL), automation (Selenium, Playwright, TestNG), API testing (Postman), tracking (Jira) and CI/CD (Jenkins). Python appears in about 29% of postings and Java in about 18%.
- SQL (about 12%) and Jira (about 12%) are easy to prove; mention the data you checked with SQL and the defect flow you ran in Jira in a bullet.
- Communication (about 36%), analytical skills (about 18%) and problem-solving (about 20%) read best as results, such as defects accepted without follow-up questions or a clear go/no-go call.
Do's and don'ts
Do this
- Match the title on your resume to the posting: employers use Test Engineer, Software Test Engineer, Quality Assurance Engineer and QA Automation Engineer for close variants of this job.
- Put a number in every bullet: test cases, defects, endpoints, coverage, runtime or incidents.
- Name the test types you run, such as regression, API, integration, UAT or load testing.
- Show the move from manual to automated testing if you made it, with the share of regression you automated.
Avoid this
- Don't write "responsible for testing" without saying what you tested, how much and what you found.
- Don't list every tool you have touched; keep the ones you can talk about in an interview.
- Don't send a software QA resume to a hardware test engineer job; those postings look for LabVIEW, MATLAB and oscilloscopes.
- Don't hide your degree or certificates at the bottom when you are entry level; about 37% of employers ask for a bachelor's degree.
