How to write a production manager resume
Write a production manager resume summary
- Start with your years in manufacturing and how many of them you spent leading people; about 46% of employers ask for 3+ years as a supervisor or manager.
- Name the industry and process, such as food packaging, metal fabrication, injection molding or electrical assembly.
- Give the size of your area: people, shifts, lines and, for plant roles, annual sales or budget.
- End with one result on safety, delivery or cost, such as line efficiency from 78% to 86% or $1.4M in savings.
Write production manager experience bullets
- Lead with safety: recordable rate before and after, days without an injury, or the safety routine you added.
- Show output and efficiency with the plant's own units: panels per shift, pounds a night, tons a day or line efficiency.
- Report quality and delivery numbers, such as scrap, first-pass yield, rework and on-time delivery.
- Count the people you train and lead, and name the improvement work, such as kaizen events, changeover cuts or 5S.
Pick the skills for a production manager resume
- Communication (about 46% of postings), problem-solving (about 28%) and leadership (about 26%) top the list; show them through a crew you ran and a problem you fixed.
- List your software by name: Excel (about 21%), Microsoft Office (about 21%), Word (about 13%) and SAP (about 7%) or your ERP system.
- Add lean manufacturing (about 7%), Six Sigma, 5S, OSHA and food safety or ISO standards when you have used them on the floor.
Do's and don'ts
Do this
- Put a number in every bullet: people, shifts, units, scrap, yield, delivery, injuries or dollars.
- List OSHA cards, Lean Six Sigma belts and production certificates near the top.
- Name your shift and crew size so the reader can judge your span of control.
- Use the plant's terms for your work, such as SQF, ISO 9001, SMED or tier meetings.
Avoid this
- Don't write "oversaw production" without saying how much, on what lines and with what result.
- Don't leave safety off; about 32% of employers name safety compliance as a duty.
- Don't list lean or Six Sigma without a project and its savings or time cut.
- Don't send a plant manager resume that shows only daily supervision and no budget or P&L work.
